Project Overview
In 2017, St. Edward’s University completed a major exterior restoration of its historic Main Building. The work included comprehensive stonework repairs, window replacements, and the installation of a new ornamental metal roof.
Each restoration method was carefully customized based on a detailed study of the building’s existing conditions, ensuring the preservation of its architectural integrity and historic character.
A central focus of the project was the restoration and fabrication of custom ornamental sheet-metal components—including cornices, crosses, and finials—crafted to replicate the original designs. The new ornamental metal shingle roof was designed and installed to match the building’s historic aesthetic while incorporating modern fabrication techniques for durability and precision.
Project Details
Challenge / Objective
Originally constructed in 1903, St. Edward’s University’s Main Building required careful planning to preserve its historical integrity while incorporating modern technology. The project demanded close coordination between Port Roofing and the historical preservation board to ensure that every update honored the building’s architectural heritage.
Among the many challenges were the removal, restoration, and reinstallation of 23 historic finials, 400 feet of decorative cornice with sheet metal arches, and the large bell tower cross—all of which required precision craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
Solution
Through a detailed submittal process, the construction of mock-ups, manufacturer inspections, and coordination with the Historic Preservation Commission, Port Roofing successfully completed the project while preserving the building’s historic aesthetic. A watertight roof system was installed, ensuring the structure’s integrity remained intact.
Port Roofing carefully removed and reinstalled 23 finials and 400 feet of decorative cornice, utilizing scaffolding to lower the finials to ground level for restoration before reinstalling them upon completion. Additionally, the large cross atop the bell tower was safely removed and reinstalled using a 225-foot manlift.
